Louis-Étienne Héricart de Thury (1776-1854), a descendent from Marie Héricart, the poet Jean de La Fontaine's wife, enter the famous Ecole des mines in April 1795. Nominated since 1810 General Inspector of Quarries (inspecteur général des carrières) until 1830. In 1823 he becomes Director of Civil Engineering and supervises the construction of the Stock Exchange, the restoration of the Thermes Palace as well as the transformation of Hôtel de Cluny into the museum as we still know it today. Due to his efforts the Artesian well at Grenelle (1833-1841) is pierced, drilled through by the engineer par Louis-Georges Mulot.

Bound in a end is another work by the same author: Rapport sur le concours ouvert pour le percement des puits forés à l'effet des eaux jaillissantes applicables aux besoins de l'agriculture. Paris, Mme Huzard, 1830. 8vo, 64 pp., 2 engraved frontispieces.
