First edition.
It was in Rome in 1802, "a few months after the publication of the Genius of Christianity" (introduction), that Chateaubriand began writing his work. He had gathered together an enormous mass of documents on the early days of Christianity, surrounded himself with scholars to guide him, and even visited the places where the action of his poem was to take place.
Fine binding, the boards of which are decorated with a gilt roulette reminiscent of that used by Bozérian. Carteret states that the first edition is "rare and sought-after in a contemporary binding". Small burn hole on pp. 341/342 of vol. II; hinges restored, rubbed.
