Vicaire, III, 73.
First edition, one of 500 copies on Marais paper.
Inscribed to " A Madame de France, Hommage affectueux, Julia Daudet"
In 1883, Madame Anatole France was Valérie Guérin, the writer's first wife. The couple divorced ten years later in 1893.
Julia Daudet held no fewer than three literary salons during her lifetime. Her ‘Thursdays’ were known and appreciated by the writers of her time. They were attended by : Pierre Loti, François Coppée, the Goncourt brothers, Marcel Proust, Émile Zola and also Anatole France. It was probably at these salons that the friendship between Julia and Valérie was born.
Julia Daudet was very active in the literary world, and not content with just holding salons, she also reread all her husband's works, as he attested: " Elle a pris une telle part à tout ce que j'ai écrit ! Pas une page qu'elle n'ait revue, retouchée, ou elle n'ait jeté un peu de sa belle poudre azur et or." (Daudet, «Histoire de mes livres», Oeuvres, Vol I, Paris, Gallimard, 1986.)
So when she took up the pen it was to her husband that she dedicated her work.
The book is made up of tableaux-souvenirs in which Julia recounts episodes from her childhood.
The text is printed in a decorative blue frame.
A very fine copy, with a slight trace of ink on the back cover.
