Copy inscribed to ‘To Achille Denis, son bien dévoué, A. Dumas fils’ on the endpaper
Achille Denis was general secretary of the Théâtre Italien in Paris. With Le Fils naturel Dumas takes the conventional motifs of certain dramas and transforms them into comedy. It is the conventional story of an abandoned son in pursuit of his father. Dumas, however, twists convention; the son does not seek to take his father's name. On the contrary, it is the father who wants to be recognised by the son, the latter having made his fortune. The comedy was appreciated by the audience during the performances, despite the unexpected ending.
