Lowndes II, 1341.

First French edition, translated from English by de Sainte-Suzanne.

The author, a surgeon, was sent to Morocco in September 1789 by General Ohara, commander at Gibraltar, to treat the son of the Sultan Muley Absulem. He had the privilege of entering the royal harem, which he describes in detail. He stayed in Morocco until June 1790, travelling between Tangiers and Mogador. The map drawn by Major Rennel is supplemented by an itinerary for the understanding of this journey by Brion père, engineer-geographer. Bound at the end of the volume are 48 manuscript pages, a copy of an article from the Mercure de France of 1801, entitled: Notions générales sur les Puissances Barbaresques.

"The most interesting and novel parts of this work relate to the harem of the Emperor of Morocco, to which the author, in his medical capacity, had access" (Lowndes).

Headpiece torn off and spine gilt a little faded.

Provenance: bookplate Château de Rosny.
