Second edition of the Origines de la langue française by the poet and critic Gilles Ménage (1613-1692). The second part, preceded by a special title page, contains Les Origines françoises by Pierre de Caseneuve, revised by Simon de Valhébert. It is decorated with a copper-engraved headband by S. Le Clerc, bearing the arms of the dedicatee Jérôme Bignon (1589-1656), jurist, Conseiller d'État and Master of the Librairie.
Ménage's Dictionnaire Etymologique is now considered to be the first major French dictionary. This second edition, published posthumously after its author's notes, contains for the first time the augmentations given by Simon de Valhébert.
A very good copy, despite a few slightly browned leaves, with the binding skilfully restored.
