Atabey, lot 872 (auction sale).
Second edition in French, translated from the German. This abridged edition contains extracts from Forskal's Observations sur l'histoire naturelle and from the Beschreibung von Arabien published in 1772.
Niebuhr was the only survivor of the expedition led from 1761 onwards to Egypt and Arabia by the Dane F.C. von Haven. Unlike his companions, he adopted the oriental way of life and diet, which not only saved his life but also enabled him to approach and understand Arab culture. His observations are extremely detailed, and Niebuhr's geographical discoveries definitively fixed the cartography of several regions of the Middle East. A fine edition well illustrated with nice engravings.
A handsome, nicely bound copy from the Mutonnat library (bookplate).
