According to the approval, the choice of these texts was Montigny's, but according to Duveen "it is difficult not to ascribe this volume chiefly to Lavoisier". It includes texts by Glauber and Stahl, as well as two memoirs on nitre by Lemery.

"This is a collection of abstracts and papers on saltpeter drawn from many sources. Lavoisier was a member of the commission gathering the material and contributed a paper of his own on the composition of nitric acid" (Cole).
