American binding Printed in Nashville / Tennesee

Not in Sabin, who quotes another work (no. 94309) by this author, a member of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Tennessee.

First edition.

The author of this compendium of ancient literature describes himself as a "backwoodsman".

Wilkins Tannehill (1787-1858), politician and writer, was mayor of Nashville between 1825 and 1827. After studying at the Pittsburgh Academy, he entered the family business in 1808. A man of great political influence and a member of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Tennessee, he was very active in sponsoring other lodges, including the one that founded Rhodes College.

An American binding

The zebra decoration on the binding, which is clearly American, is particularly elegant.

Some foxing.
