An important educational contribution, written by the Comtesse de Genlis (1746-1830). Le Théâtre à l'usage des jeunes personnes is a four-volume collection of 24 plays that shed light on the social, political and cultural changes that occurred in France before the French Revolution. The two plays in particular, La Marchande de Modes and Le Libraire, depict the correct behaviour of the bourgeoisie towards the aristocracy and its natural place in the world. These two plays illustrate the educational and political role of Genlis, who attempts to tame the bourgeoisie through the dual argument of correct education and effective parenting, in order to maintain the social order of the Ancien Régime in pre-revolutionary France.
