Charles Vial, 'Ancien négociant' and breeder of mulberry trees for silk production in France (see Annales de la Société Séricole, 1847) is the author of several works, most of them written under his pseudonym Arcade or d'Orient. In his Philosophie naturelle he discusses major themes such as the four elements, motion, gravitation, speed, celestial bodies, etc., ending with philosophical questions on the great scientists Descartes, Newton and Euler.
