Bound in 18th century armorial red morocco

Palau 99186; not in Adams.

First edition.

Important collection of Councils held in Spain between the years 362 and 742; pages VII through XV contain a bibliography of the manuscripts consulted for this edition.

The work is dedicated to Felipe II, King of Spain. Garcia de Loaysa y Mendoza (1478-1546), archbishop of Sevilla and later Cardinal, entered the Domincan order at Salamanca ; he was professed in 1495 in Penafiel. Having spent several years in Sicily, Loaysa returned to Spain where he made the acquaintance of Charles V of Spain and held subsequently important offices of political importance such as President of the American Council of the Indies. In that capacity he was a proponent of the Dominican line of thought and the New Laws of 1542 protecting the native Americans. He became Grand Inquisitor in 1546, the year of his death.

Contemporary red morocco by Duseuil

Count Henri-Louis Loménie (1658-1743) had inherited not only his father's Louis-Henri (1636-1698) title as a state secretary, but also his important collection of bibliophile rarities. Most of his books were bound in red morocco by the famous binder Duseuil; the library was subsequently sold in London in 1724 and in the early 1930's in Paris. Although Olivier attributes the tools used on this binding to Henri-Louis (see plate 1077, n° 4), this is most likely a tools used for both bibliophiles (see plate 1076, n° 2).

Magnificent, broad margined copy, last leaf formerly reinforced.
