Réédition, à la date de l'originale, de la Métamorphose des plantes de Goethe.

Osler précise que les exemplaires en 86 pp. dont le nom de l'auteur est imprimé au-dessus du titre constituent la véritable édition originale, alors que ceux dont le nom de Goethe se trouve sous le titre, comme ici, ont été imprimés successivement.

Sparrow cite un exemplaire identique au nôtre, dédicacé à Jussieu. "A work of utmost consequence in the development of the theory of evolution… A forerunner of Darwin in many respects, [Goethe] believed in organic evolution. He coined the world morphology" (Sparrow). "With regard both to Linnæus and Wolff it may be said that they anticipated the morphology of plants, but that to Goethe belongs the credit of establishing it" (Lewes, cité par Osler).
